Mimicking Wes Driver

My friend Simone yesterday came for an unexpected visit. We went to the beach and skated a bit.
I've shot a couple of pics at the local skatepark, but since they turned out being nothing special, i thought of a discussion i had with Trony a while ago about photo retouching.

The picture above is mimicking Wes Driver's photo retouching style as shown on DBmag.com.

Well here are the fundamentals:

1. First take one of you best outtakes. I mean, you probably don't want to apply this heavy process to a photo wich is already beautiful for its lighting o natural colors. So, start from a pic you don't really are in love with.
2. Open it in Photoshop. Apply all routine adjustments: levels, contrast and curves to better the lighting and the colors as you would usually do.
3. Bring up the saturation adjustment layer and desaturate the colors (here i've used a value of -38, but of course it depends on the picture).
4. Bring up the channel mixer adjustments layer and set color values to: red:+36; green:+28; blue:+36. Then tick the monochrome box.
5. Switch this layer's blending mode to soft light.
6. Select all, copy merged layers and paste above you image layer (so that this new layer sits just beneath the adjustments layers). Apply the diffuse glow filter on your taste and then gaussian blur to the image with a value of 5px (or greater, if you're working on a hi-res image).
7. Switch layer blending to soft light, and you should be done.

Later you may want to use local brush-based tools like blur or burn to improve your images details.

Please note that the one here is a quick and basic technique to achieve the result shown above - which by the way may not even be close to the process used by Driver - and that there are probably at least 10 different (and/or better ways) to do the same, so feel free to suggest.

Hei Pete, when i say "Select all, copy merged layers", i mean you should select you canvas (if you're on a Mac you can use the shortcut Command+A, or go under Select > Select All in the menu bar) then hit Shift+Command+C (again on a Mac) or go under Edit > Copy Merged in the menu bar to copy all your layers as one.

Is there any way you could explain the "diffuse glow" effect a little more? I have experimented with different setttings, but I'm not sure exactly what I'm going for, or what would provide a decent effect.

Hi JR, actually the diffuse glow filter can be a little tricky sometimes. In Photoshop CS2, you'll have 3 sliders: Graininess, Glow Amount and Clear Amount.
The first one has to be set to 0. The Clear amount determines the % of the area of your picture which will be affected by the filter. The Glow amount setting instead determines the strenght of the effect in the areas of the picture affected.
So you'll have to play with these 2 sliders to achieve the look you desire, since the outcome results are based on the photograph itself.
